Surviving the Wilderness

Daily life use to evolve around wilderness survival. Even if you feel protected and safe in your cocoon of modern living it is still a good plan to have some of the survival skills that could keep you alive in a bad situation. Many people believe that survival skills are only for outdoor enthusiasts, backpackers and sportsmen; but this is not the case.

What are survival skills you ask? Survival skills involves the know-how and techniques that will help you survive in hazardous conditions or dangerous locations. These techniques could save your life should you find yourself in an extreme environment such as a jungle, desert, or mountains; or if you are in a bad storm or earthquake. Some of the skills you should learn include how to build a shelter, how to pack a survival kit, how to gain clean drinking water, and how to build a fire. These skills will help you no matter what the situation is whether it is winter survival, or survival in the desert, forest or mountain.

The next couple of paragraphs will look at these survival skills and give you a better understanding what each skill entails. The order of focus for the survival skills are based on the basic needs of human life and the situation itself. That being said, a shelter is usually the first task people need to take, this will protect you from harsh conditions. Shelter is a priority because it will get you out of the harsh conditions should it be intense sun, rain, or snow; you shelter could be a lean-to or could be constructed from the poncho that you have in your survival kit.

The next important thing to surviving in the wilderness is getting drinking water. This can be done in a number of ways. In the desert you can use condensation traps while in the jungle you could find water in the vines of trees or you could find a stream or river. You water should be brought to a boil before you drink it.

To boil your water you will need fire, and this is the next survival skill you will need. Fire is useful for warmth as well as protection. You might think a fire is the most necessary survival skill but although it can make surviving easier and more comfortable, a shelter is still more important.

Next we will look at the survival kit, depending on the situation surrounding your survival you may not have a survival kit. I recommend a survival book and a first aid kit in any survival bag, these could save your life should anything bad ever happen to you. You need to tend to your injuries in the wild before they get worse.
